How Rover's fees work
Rover takes a 20% commission from sitters on every booking in most of the US, 25% in California, and 15% in the UK. On top of that, Rover charges your client an 11% service fee at checkout in the US (15% in the UK, capped at £49 per booking). A $30 walk costs the client about $33.30 and lands the sitter $24 — or $22.50 in California.
Where the money goes
Rover's sitter commission and client-side service fee cover the platform's marketplace costs: discovery and matching, customer support, the Rover Guarantee (vet reimbursement coverage on platform bookings), payment processing, and refund coverage. California's higher 25% sitter rate reflects additional employer-side costs the platform absorbs under AB5.
Walkies vs marketplace platforms
Walkies is independent software for running your own pet sitting business — scheduling, invoicing, GPS walk tracking, client management, and a companion app for pet owners. It's designed for sitters who book clients directly (referrals, neighbours, local marketing, social media) rather than via a marketplace. It doesn't connect to Rover and doesn't change anything about how Rover bookings work.
Frequently asked questions
Two cuts. The sitter pays 20% out of their rate in most US states, 25% in California, and 15% in the UK. On top of that, the client pays an extra 11% in the US (15% in the UK, capped at £49 per booking) at checkout. The calculator above runs both numbers for whichever region you pick.
California's AB5 law reclassified gig workers and forced platforms like Rover to absorb additional employer-side costs in the state. Rather than eat that, Rover passes it through as a higher 25% sitter service fee for CA bookings.
No — tips are excluded from the service fee. Anything a client tips on a booking lands in your pocket in full. The slider above lets you bake an average tip into the take-home number.
No. Rover's Terms of Service prohibit arranging a booking on Rover and then completing it off-platform, and prohibit soliciting clients to book off-platform. Doing either can result in account suspension or deactivation for both the sitter and the owner, and bookings paid outside Rover lose the Rover Guarantee and 24/7 support coverage. Anyone considering their options off Rover should read the latest Rover Terms of Service in full.
